Can you imagine a world with no rhino?
Save the Waterberg Rhino is working hard to prevent this from happening.
You can help too by donating today, becoming a patron or hosting a fundraising
event.
Why should you give?
Since 2008 more than 8900 rhinos have been killed for their horns. And this is only the number of known rhino poaching’s. At the peak of rhino poaching more than 3 rhinos were being killed per day. Even though the poaching has declined during 2020 there was still 1 rhino killed every day.
At the peak of the crisis experts predicted that the African rhinos could become extinct in 10 years. Successful anti-poaching measures have reduced the likelihood of this but only if the work and funding continues.
Rhinos are critical species, and are known as keystone species. They are also vital to many livelihoods of rural people.
Why give to Save the Waterberg Rhino?
As a grass-roots organisation we have low operating costs so the majority of the funds we receive can go directly to protecting rhino by creating a vast area where rhinos are safe.
The Waterberg holds the second largest population of rhino in South Africa and therefore a significant rhino conservation area making our work crucial for their survival.
The vast majority of funds for rhino in South Africa have gone to other areas, with the Waterberg receiving little of such funding. With only 1.5% of all global charitable giving going to wildlife and habitats, that’s a small piece of the pie to save rhino, the planet and all species. Therefore your donation will make a direct and huge contribution to rhino conservation.
As a STWR supporter, your funds will not only help to secure the Waterberg area for rhino and other species but also make an impact against wildlife crime. Wildlife crime is also connected to other crimes, national security, and human trafficking – as these impact everyone everywhere – your donation will have far reaching impacts beyond just saving rhinos.
With the only threat to African rhino being poaching, the Waterberg, has the opportunity and potential to produce a safe haven for increased breeding space for both white and black rhino but this requires continuous funding.
How STWR uses these funds to save rhino.
Working with stakeholders and providing funds and equipment to help combat poaching and the illegal trade in rhino horn.
Helping to increase security measures around protected areas and rhino
reserves and to expand that protection through community based approaches.
Increasing confidence by creating and supporting safety, security and support systems for rhino reserves so they do not remove rhino from their reserve because of the security risk of rhino and in turn help the wildlife-industry to protect wildlife, create and sustain jobs and increase income avenues for local communities, which then recognise the value of rhino and other wildlife.
Working towards creating a 2 million ha rhino safe area which will help preserve the genetic integrity of the meta-population and that allows for breeding and conservation of the species to ensure the future survival of the African white and black rhino.
Creating and promoting the awareness of rhino poaching crisis and the knock on consequences for people, biodiversity and economies.
We can save rhinos from extinction and the generosity of people like you
is how we will save them. Your donation or pledge will make an immediate difference in the conservation and protection rhinos.
